History

In the early 1960s, Aubrey Rhodes, Sr. founded Rhodes-Murphy & Co., a full-service tax preparation company that remains in operation in Georgia and South Carolina. In 1989, the company formed a subsidiary, Rhodes Computer Services, to start developing tax preparation software. Four years later, Rhodes Computer began selling taxation software known as "Taxslayer Pro" to tax preparers and accountants throughout the United States, and in 1998, the firm began developing TaxSlayer.com to market its software to individuals. The operating model was based on executives' belief that their firm's standing in the field of tax preparation would translate to similar standing in Internet-based tax preparation. Since then, TaxSlayer has grown to become one of the largest online tax preparation services and a direct competitor to Intuit's TurboTax.

Sports sponsorships

NASCAR

In 2009 and 2010, TaxSlayer.com was the primary sponsor of TRG Motorsports' NASCAR Sprint Cup Series car driven by Bobby Labonte.

In 2010, TaxSlayer.com signed a sponsorship deal with JR Motorsports for nine races in the NASCAR Nationwide Series. Dale Earnhardt, Jr. drove the TaxSlayer.com car to a 3rd-place finish at Bristol Motor Speedway on March 19, 2011.

In 2011, TaxSlayer.com announced a 14-race extension for the 2012 season. Dale Earnhardt, Jr. drove for 2 of the races, one at Daytona International Speedway and the other at Bristol Motor Speedway.

In 2013, Regan Smith, driving for JR Motorsports, drove the TaxSlayer.com car to victory lane at the Aaron's 312 at Talladega Superspeedway and the Alliance Truck Parts 250 at Michigan International Speedway.

College football

TaxSlayer is the title sponsor for the Gator Bowl, a college football bowl game held in Jacksonville, Florida. In 2014 the company struck a new six-year deal with Gator Bowl Sports to rename the bowl the TaxSlayer Bowl beginning in 2015. Thus making TaxSlayer.com the only title sponsor to completely eliminate the historical and traditional name of one of the original college football bowl games (the Gator Bowl was the 6th oldest bowl game, playing its first game following the 1945 season). TaxSlayer has been the title sponsor since 2011, when the bowl became the TaxSlayer.com Gator Bowl. On January 2, 2012, Dale Earnhardt, Jr. drove the TaxSlayer.com Nationwide Series car onto the field and flipped the coin for the opening coin toss.

TaxSlayer.com has also been an associate sponsor of the Armed Forces Bowl and BBVA Compass Bowl.

TaxSlayer sponsors three PGA Tour golfers, including Patrick Reed and Kevin Kisner.
